Red Pandas
The facility to display red pandas was erected on a site where old bird aviaries had once stood, and partially extends into the Pere David's deer enclosure; the same part of which has also been significantly altered.
According to latest molecular analyses, the red panda (Ailurus fulgens fulgens) ranks as a separate family of Ailuridae and its sole member. Home to this carnivore is a region of southern China, northern India and Nepal. It differs from its more famous namesake in a whole range of traits and features, chiefly concerning size and colour. With its massive coat the red panda is perfectly adapted to life in cold climates. Sadly, this creature has become endangered in its homeland.
